Lent 2022

While we are not massive followers of what is known as “the liturgical calendar”, Lent is almost upon us. While for many it is a time of fasting, for others it is time to develop better habits.

One of the things we would like to suggest is that this lent we focus on Generosity. Each night teams from local churches go out in cars and vans to help with the soup run. I have been on the soup run and couple of times, and one of the things that they give out, as well as food and hot drinks, is clothes and sleeping bags.

Key items are often – underwear (men’s and women’s), socks, hats and also sleeping bags. I wonder if this Lent you could start collecting brand new clothing items each week, and we can end up, by Easter with a big box of quality, unused, clothes to give to the Soup Run to give away. Is this something you could do?

Carnival

The start of Lent is marked by Shrove Tuesday – or Carnival – Carnival means Remove Meat. So while many people have veganuary, the church has traditionally gone Vegan for much of Lent (Sundays do not count). But in order to encourage us all to consider what Lent might mean we are having a Vegan Sunday on March 13th, after the service. With a vegan feast supplied by the amazing team at Hedgerow Hound!

The current plan is:

Adult meals would be a burrito style dish (Ranch beans, vg cheeze, salsa, yoghurt, mixed baby leaf salad) that will include gluten.

Child’s dish will be a mac and cheese mexican style bowl with ranch beans, vegan cheese and a bit of salad too. This will contain gluten and mustard.

Gluten-Free – TBC

Please can you help us by either “buying a ticket” via the DCBC event page – Vegan Sunday – or by emailing your requirement to minister@devonportbaptist.co.uk the suggested cost is £5 per adult (gluten-free option available) or £3 per child (but if money is an option please don’t worry) payable on the day!
