Yarn Bombing

Following a break from yarn bombing and planting, we decided to colour Marlborough Street with bunting, created from plastic bags and scrap fabric by a local arts and crafts group, which we hung over time between trees in the flower beds. Then one recent Saturday morning a few of us came together to weed, litter pick, plant and to hang more bunting cut and sewn together for us by a local Church.

Passers-by and businesses along Marlborough-street stopped a little while and chatted as they saw what was going on. A two-person team from the hair salon said they wanted to join in,  with a fork ready to dig, and offered us cups of tea.

A woman walking by asked us how she could get involved and then went off to retrieve her gloves from home. The pub landlord bought flowers from a local shop and with the shop assistant walked over to us laden with flowers to plant in the beds. The fish and chip shop filled our watering can. People talked to one another and gave something of themselves, The planting created conversation and in a small but powerful way we joined in with God declaring his Kingdom come in Devonport!

“It’s great people are doing good things for the community.”

“It looks cool now, a lot better than before.”

“Wow, the flowers look beautiful.”

Yarn Bombing in the Baptist Times

Quite a number of us have helped in some way with Yarn-Bombing, whether that is knitting a patch, decorating a tree or bench, digging out weeds or watering plants.

All those efforts have not only caused a buzz locally, but have also got the attention of the Baptist Times – please take a look at the recent article published online.
